[edit] Coordinate Systems
On this date in 1596, French philosopher and mathematician René Descartes was born. We can thank him for the Cartesian Coordinate System, which allows you to pinpoint a location on a map using x/y coordinates (or x/y/z in 3-D space). Cartesian coordinates are used for specifying pixels on computer monitors -- the top/left pixel is often (0,0).
